The title of this article is just a question I once wondered, I just want to create opinion as always. I once wrote for the Ezines, an article explaining the every day more complexities of the Search Engines algorithms cycle.
I was explaining in that article as Mathematical algorithms has been so far one of the most important axis of what we call material development of our actual civilization. Mathematics and physics rule the world we actually live in. They rock. And it's so the case that it even delimits and define the way human beings see life, under its shadow define concepts we have on things like a projection.

Search Engines for example, work with mathematics, particularly algorithms, according to the source of this article Google's algorithm for ranking web pages can be adapted to determine which species are critical for sustaining ecosystems, following the previous cited source, Dr Allesina, of the University of Chicago's department of ecology and Evolution, told BBC News: "First of all we had to reverse the definition of the algorithm. In PageRank, a web page is important if important pages point to it. In our approach a species is important if it points to important species."
Search Engines become more intelligent as they get closer to the user's experience, say us. One of the best example is the fact nowadays they are striving to be more social network like and conversely social networks are trying to be more searchable besides the links and pagesranks in the recent past, therefore it will be needed another formula to explain this references instead of the classic PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn)) and another architecture rather than the old one below.

In the past Ouagadougou conference This year, Google will introduce 550 or so improvements to its algorithm, that means they are optimizing and becoming more agile and faster than ever, after talking and exchanges ideas on this there were quite many decisions at the Search Quality Launch Meeting which is usually held every week.
If you want more food for thought, this article which I consider really really important and interesting can give you a more detailed and thought provoking ideas on this matter, however there is a lack of sentiments on their projects creation, say, those who search are humans therefore they should also focus on us if they want to make search engines more intelligent, i guess thats the competitive advantage Social Networks has.
I just want to let one thing clear over here, most of our inventions, creations and so many wonderful industrial, devices, gadgets, etc, even the way we see things in life, everything is influenced in a way by math, technology is just a tool, it is not a goal.
The fact is SE will always be working with links so far...Meanwhile to be prepared for those changes remember links must come from sites with their own content, which are relevant to your own website activity. They have to be real sites, not artifacts to fool search engines.
They usually have the following requirements: Site has to be PR 3 or better, Only permanent links, Related to your activity; very important: no gambling, porn, illegal content, etc., Blogs are a must same as Social Media SEO, Indexed in Google in the last 45 days; the page where the link will appear has to be indexed by Google, Yahoo! and MSN, If it is a links page, then it cannot contain more than 40 links, and they have to have associated text, No directories, No sites under construction, No mirror sites, link sites, sites overloaded with contextual ads or pop-ups, etc., the page where the link appears has to be search engine-friendly: no frames, redirections, links from flash or JavaScript, etc.
Links have to be clearly visible and text-based (no image links), Links cannot appear as paid or sponsored links, One link per domain - sub domains are not acceptable, Pages cannot be inactivated in robots.txt, or contain a "rel=nofollow", Sites have to be in different IP addresses, in different class C, Sites cannot participate in link exchange programmes, web rings, etc., Pages cannot be hosted in free hosting sites, such as Geocities or Tripod, among others.
